It's actually part of a national park which includes two other beaches... Nai Yang and Nai Thon which are to the south.
The main reason this area was declared a national park (in 1981) was to protect the Olive Ridley Sea Turtles which lay their eggs here from November to February.
HOW TO GET THERE
The best way to find it is to make your way to Phuket International Airport and drive north from there. You'll find the highway goes past the JW Marriott Resort & Spa and leads you straight to Mai Khao Beach.
ABOUT THE BEACH
Mai Khao actually means "white wood". It's 9 kilometers or 5.5 miles long and is the longest beach in Phuket. It looks out over the Andaman Sea.
The only resort I know of in this area is the JW Marriott. So... if you want a long, white, sandy beach with crystal clear water, and a little remoteness and isolation... then this is the place.
WHEN TO GO
During the dry season the water is fine for swimming, but during the rainy season you'll find strong currents and big waves which can make Mai Khao Beach a little dangerous at that time of the year.
Due to the remoteness of this beach you won't find any life guards to pull you out of the water if you get into difficulty.
Of course Phuket is warm all year round so you won't need too many clothes!
IN SUMMARY
If you don't like the crowds of Patong Beach and enjoy being alone with nature, Mai Khao is perfect.
I've been told this is one of the few beaches in Phuket where you can do a little nude bathing without disturbing the locals. No-one is going to bother you here except for the odd sea turtle!
