Map Of Phuket

Each map of Phuket you see below will successively narrow down your position so you get a better idea of where you are in the world and know the basics of getting around the island.

Why do you need a map of Phuket? I don't know about you but when I visit a new place I like to get my bearings and at least know north and south and some of the major landmarks.

Phuket (pronounced "Boo-get") is the largest island in Thailand with an area of 543 square kilimeters, which is about the same size as Singapore. If you look below, you'll notice that I've indicated its location with a small rectangle, on the west coast of mainland Thailand.

Phuket is commonly called the "Pearl of the Andaman" because it looks out over the Andaman Sea to the south and west. Further out is the Indian Ocean and to the east is the Krabi Sea.

Now here's a few numbers for you...

The widest part of Phuket from east to west is approximately 21 kilometers and the longest from north to south is almost 49 kilometers. It's located 8 degrees north of the equator which, you'll be pleased to know, places it a safe distance below the latitude of the destructive tropical storms.

It's surrounded by 32 smaller islands and is connected to the mainland by 2 bridges, the Sarasin and the newer one which is Thoa Thep Krasatri.

Map of Phuket #2 - where Phuket is in the region

About 70% of Phuket is mountainous with the highest part of the island, Mai Tha Sip Song (it means 12 canes), being 529 meters above sea level. The remaining 30% is low plains and beaches.

So I hope that all helps you get your bearings. While you're here you can always pick up a free map of Phuket from the airport when you arrive and usually your resort will have one in their reception area.

So no excuses for getting lost! And even if you do... the locals are very helpful and will point you in the right direction.
