Sail boat charters are extremely popular in many parts of the world such as the Mediterranean, the Caribbean and The Great Barrier Reef. Their popularity in Phuket however is still to reach similar proportions. The main reasons why sail boat charters haven't been so popular in the past seems to be a lack of awareness by the rest of the world, and a lack of infrastructure such as deep water marinas, mooring facilities and safe harbours. Things are changing rapidly though and increasing numbers of sail boat charters and expanding marina facilities, along with the maturing professionalism of tourism in Thailand have created an opportunity for all of us to participate in what has been until recently, a secret known only to a minority of people.
You're more likely to come across some fishermen in their longtail boats which is a great opportunity to buy some of their catch for lunch. You can explore the hundreds of small islands, some of them populated with villagers who are curious and friendly. There's easy access to charter bases and charter operators who are very experienced so you can be sure you're in for a great adventure. Sail boat charters in Phuket are now as good as you'd expect anywhere in the world but with the added bonus of that unique Thai combination of friendliness, culture and of course the food. And speaking of food, you'll find that you can sample it on most of the islands. Now I just want to tell you about the choices you have when it comes to sail boat charters. You've got three main options and I guess they depend on your level of experience and how much you want to do yourself. The first option is to go to a remote beach or island for a day or two, accompanied by around 10 to 20 people.
You'll really feel like you're in Thailand on one of these! Personally, I prefer what's called 'bareboat charter'. It's called that because you sail in the bare boat without a crew, except for the people you bring along with you of course. Obviously someone has to know how to sail! There's quite a few sail boat charters to choose from with a variety of yachts including my favourite... the two-hulled catamaran. Lots of room, very stable, and great for shallow water so you can get really close to some of those beautiful deserted beaches for a romantic lunch or a solitary walk. From your base in Phuket you can reach the first islands in about two hours. If you're more into being pampered then you also have a choice of crewed and catered motor or sailing yachts.
Included in these sail boat charters are friendly, professional crews and the finest of Thai cuisine. This is really doing it in style. At this stage I can recommend one particular luxury motor yacht charter for you called Leylai ... just click this link and I'll tell you all about it. I'll be exploring some of the other sail boat charters while I'm here in Phuket and letting you know about the ones I think offer the best experience. There's a vast and varied choice and too many to list, but then again, I only want to find you the best of the best!
